HyGear delivers first HyGEN® based on electrified SMR technology, producing 400 kg/h fuel cell grade hydrogen using biogas
2 September 2025
HyGear has successfully delivered a fully 40ft containerized HyGEN® system integrated with a 250 kW electrified steam-methane reformer (e-SMR) to produce clean hydrogen. This compact installation produces autonomously up to 400 kilograms per day of fuel cell hydrogen directly on site, using biogas as feedstock. Decentralized production of H2 eliminates the need for transport and ensuring safe and efficient operation close to the point of use, as well as makes it resilient against grid congestion. When combined with HyGear’s carbon capture technology, the hydrogen production through eSMR technology will be carbon negative.
This large-scale proof of concept is part of the EReTech EU project and is now being commissioned in Southern Germany, demonstrating the future of decentralised hydrogen: sustainable, scalable, and cost-competitive.
