HyGear developed two Hy.GEN® systems, a hydrogen compressor, a buffer tank, and a backup tank for Atakaş Steel.

Hydrogen for steel manufacturing

Two Hy.GEN® 150 systems have been delivered to the project site of Atakaş Steel. Together the systems produce 220 Nm3/hr of high-purity hydrogen (99.999%). High-purity hydrogen is used for steel manufacturing. The systems apply the high-yield steam methane reforming (SMR) technology. These units produce hydrogen at the end user’s site, increasing the sustainability of the company. Simultaneously, on-site hydrogen supply increases the reliability of supply and decreases the costs. With the acquired service and maintenance contract Atakaş Steel ensures high operational availability and continuous production processes for their factory.

Atakas uses the hydrogen for their high-quality galvanizing lines and annealing furnaces. These techniques protect the steel against corrosion and soften it for processing.

Metal industry

Hydrogen plays a crucial role in modern metallurgical processes, serving as both a protective atmosphere and a reactive agent in metal production and treatment. In steel manufacturing, hydrogen is used during the Direct Reduction of Iron (DRI). Hydrogen-rich atmospheres prevent oxidation during annealing processes while simultaneously reducing iron oxides to enhance material purity. For non-ferrous metallurgy, controlled hydrogen environments facilitate brazing, sintering, and heat treatment operations across aluminum, copper, and precious metal industries.
